Playing in the leaves reminds us about Living an EQ Life©.

It has been such a cold, wet and dreary October in Minneapolis, I was afraid that fall would completely pass us by this year.  Then yesterday, the bright blue sky, crisp cool breeze and the sight and sound of neighbor kids playing outside in the leaves reminded me why fall is so important to me...It is about transitions.

After moving to the Twin Cities in 1981, I remember spending the summer setting up my new life in South Minneapolis – you know the drill; finding a place to live, a place to work, a place to buy groceries, get gas, meeting new people blah, blah, blah… All of this activity was incredibly exciting and energizing for me. By early October, change was in the air and I can vividly recall thinking that ‘I wasn’t in Kansas (actually Illinois) anymore.’

It was a beautiful fall day (much like yesterday) when I sat on a bench at Lake Harriet (one of our 10,000 lakes) and started to read the book, Transitions by William Bridges. I dusted it off again yesterday just because…and I must tell you that it is as relevant today as it was 28 years ago.

“Every transition begins with an ending. We have to let go of the old thing before we can pick up the new – not just outwardly, but inwardly, where we keep our connections to the people and places that act as definitions of who we are.”

Sometimes I forget to remember to let go of the old things before I move on to something new.  Yesterday’s bright blue sky, crisp cool breeze and the sight and sound of neighbor kids playing outside in the leaves reminded me why transitions are important to Living an EQ Life©.
